Published in 1995, this 2010 reprint is the companion volume to the author’s Studebaker Trucks: 1927–1940, Photo Archive. It follows the same format, offering a brief, three-page introduction and 116 black-and-white photographs featuring mostly single-sentence captions that provide only the most rudimentary information. The photographs, however, provide a comprehensive visual feast and include examples of vans, buses, military vehicles, pickups, and diesel tractors, as well as assembly-line scenes. The introduction reviews Studebaker’s history through 1940, devoting about one-and-a-half pages to the period from 1941 to the end of civilian production on Dec. 27, 1963, and military production in 1964. Applegate points out that, “The 1941 models were a major transition for Studebaker, the M-series trucks having been styled by the famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy.” The introduction also highlights Studebaker’s role in World War II, the design work of Robert Bourke and his team beginning in 1949, and the 1954 merger with Packard, all set against the continually limited funds available for truck development.
