For this Photo Archive title, the prolific and peripatetic P.A. Letourneau used the archival resources of the McCormick-International Harvester Co. Collection at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison. Unlike a requirement for Letourneau, currently a visit via the internet can avoid the need to travel to research the collection. In the brief two-page introduction, editor Letourneau explains that International Harvester used half or full tracks manufactured by different suppliers when it offered its first “track-equipped” crawler tractors, the McCormick-Deering 10-20 and 15-30 models, around 1924. By 1928, the company manufactured its own tracks for the two models, designating them as Track Layers. The company introduced the first TracTracTor, the Model 15 or T-15, in 1930. I had hoped, but to no avail, to learn about the origins of the creative TracTracTor label. Letourneau notes that the TracTracTor designation “seems to have been dropped soon after the 1947 introduction of the TD-24.” As a result, the book does not include crawler models built after 1948. While featuring minimal captions, the 118 black-and-white full-page photographs offer a wonderful array of publicity “beauty shots” and scenes of TracTracTors at work in a variety of agricultural and industrial settings.
