The Encyclopedia Britannica is now available only online, but long live the marvelous, heavy, profusely illustrated, and text-rich print edition of Jim Allen and John Glancy’s International Scout Encyclopedia. Published in 2020, it is an updated revision of the edition the two IH experts produced in 2016. Replete with numerous photographs and grounded in primary sources, the book details the definitive history of the iconic Scout. Beginning with the efforts of legendary designer Ted Ornas and his styling department to develop the concept in 1958, seven chapters are devoted to the Scout 80, introduced in 1961; the Scout 800, 800A, and 800B; and the Scout II, Traveler, and Terra, with the marque’s termination in 1980. True to its encyclopedic ambition, each of the chapters provides an extensive multi-page compilation of data including VINs, model codes, production and sales totals, specifications, engine details, and available colors. The “Scout Special Encyclopedia” chapter uses an album format to highlight such offerings as the Scout Camper, the Red Carpet-series, and the SSII. Another chronicles the Scouts planned for 1981 and beyond, while the final chapter deals with off-road racing. Five fact-filled appendices include Line Setting Tickets, serial and VIN locations, and a visual guide to graphics packages.
